Home insurance provider Lloyds TSB is expecting a surge in claims if Environment Agency flood warnings are correct.
The agency is predicting autumn tides to be the highest for 20 years. Combined with stormy weather, Lloyds TSB says this could cause a flooding disaster for homes across the south and east coasts.
Gary Hurry of Lloyds TSB said: "Burying your head in the sand is no defence against the very real threat of serious flooding."
"Thinking ahead and devising a plan to help reduce the risks can help homeowners minimise any potential disruption," he added.
The company notes the importance of moving valuable objects to higher levels of the home, as well as storing clean dry clothes and items of sentimental value in a safe place.
Phil Else, managing director of disaster restoration experts Rainbow International, said: "With hosepipe bans still in force in many areas it may seem nonsensical to be talking about the prospect of flooding."
However, he stressed that the threat is real and damage can be "emotionally crippling".
