Home insurance provider Halifax has revealed figures showing there is one forced entry every 60 seconds in the winter months.

The company bases its findings on insurance claims from 2003-05, which display a 21 per cent rise in the number of burglaries committed by forced entry once the clocks go back.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "As the nights get darker and winter approaches, householders should be taking as many precautions as possible."

"Simple measures like adding extra high quality locks on windows and doors, installing burglar alarms and security lighting should also be considered," she added.

The insurer is warning customers to be vigilant after Sundays clock change, as it says the darker evenings provide more cover to thieves.

In nine per cent of cases, burglaries occurred after the perpetrator forced their way past the homeowner at the door.

Halifax Home Insurance offers up to a 30 per cent no-claims discount and the option to pay monthly at no extra cost.
