Home insurance provider Halifax has warned Britons against the perils of Bonfire Night activities.
In a survey of British adults, the bank found nearly six million use fluids such as petrol, white spirit and methylated spirits to light their bonfires.
Halifax found that £296 million of damage has been caused to British homes by accidents involving outdoor fires.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax home insurance, said: "Using combustible or explosive materials such as petrol or white spirits to light a bonfire is extremely dangerous."
"Halifax home insurance is urging Britons to remember they need to take reasonable care, otherwise they may invalidate their insurance policies," she added.
The bank encourages its customers to site bonfires well away from trees or hedges, keep guests and alcohol well away from it and ensure there is nobody inside the bonfire before lighting it.
Halifax is offering a 25 per cent discount on all policies bought online before the end of the year and up to a 30 per cent no-claims discount.
