Financial services provider More Than has announced it is offering additional contents insurance to cover theft of presents in the run-up to Christmas.
The insurer is giving an additional ten per cent on all of its home insurance policies to allow for up to £7,500 of extra items to be covered.
Increasing contents insurance is a response to research by More Than which showed that Britons spend about £11 billion more than usual in December.
Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director of More Than, said: "We tend to splash out on presents and food at this time of the year."
"Opportunistic thieves do strike during the festive season, so its really important people make sure they are doing everything they can," he added.
Figures published by More Than showed that 13 per cent more burglaries take place in December than in any other month.
The most at-risk time of day was noted by the company as being early evening, as it is often dark before occupants are home from work and many items are boxed and wrapped beneath the Christmas tree.
More Than offers a 25 per cent discount to customers buying online and says it provides a "whopping" £75,000 cover as standard in its contents insurance.
