Lloyds TSB has announced it is expecting a significant increase in the number of fire-related claims by its contents insurance customers this Christmas.

A 70 per cent rise in claims is anticipated by the bank as consumers deck their homes with flammable decorations such as tinsel.

Unattended candles are expected to add to the problem, with naked flames expected to "wreak havoc", according to Lloyds TSB.

Managing director Phil Loney said: "Whether youre putting up the decorations or preparing the Christmas lunch its important to take extra care."

"Were expecting a huge rise in the number of domestic fires, but there is still time to avoid becoming a statistic," he added.

Research conducted by the bank found that almost a third of homeowners have no specific escape route planned in case of fire.

However, 92 per cent of respondents claimed to feel confident about the appropriate course of action if a conflagration were to take place.

Lloyds TSB issues more home insurance policies than any other provider, according to a study by the Growth from Knowledge group.
