Home insurance provider Direct Line has recommended that its customers take out extra cover to ensure purchases from the January sales are protected against damage or theft.

The advice follows research from the insurer which found that shoppers are likely to spend up to £1.8 billion more in the New Year sales than they did in January 2006.

About £73 million of this is likely to be in the form of vouchers received as Christmas presents, according to Direct Line.

Carmel McCarthy, spokesperson for Direct Line, said: "With all the extra possessions in the home this Christmas, its important that homeowners make sure all of their home contents are fully covered."

"Direct Line offers a ten per cent increase in cover over the Christmas period," she added, noting that this could allow customers the time to assess the required value of home insurance for their new possessions.

Customers purchasing both contents insurance and building insurance can benefit from a 50 per cent discount on their contents premium, Direct Line says.
