Halifax Home Insurance is warning its customers that an estimated £170 million will be lost to burglars in January.

Up to two-fifths of this is likely to occur in "daylight robberies", according to Halifax Home Insurance, which found that 40 per cent of burglaries occur between 06:00 GMT and 18:00 GMT.

However, the most likely time for thefts remains the dark winter evenings, with 33 per cent of all burglaries happening from 18:00 GMT to midnight.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "We tend to see a rise in burglaries during January as burglars know that it is the time when our homes are packed with lots of new and expensive items."

"We must remember that thieves are opportunists and will strike during the day or night," she added.

Over 76,000 homes will be broken into, Halifax estimates, at the rate of one every 35 seconds over the course of the month.

A recent report from financial researcher Defaqto rated Halifax as "five stars" for its contents insurance and building insurance provision.
