Home insurance provider Direct Line has suggested that its customers ensure bicycles are covered by their policies and add them as an extra item if not.
The advice follows figures published by Direct Line which show that the total cost of replacing stolen bicycles totals some £35 million annually in the UK.
Meanwhile, up to 54 per cent of customers surveyed were found to not have coverage for bicycles on their home insurance policies.
Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, said: "With bike theft on the up, cyclists need to be more careful than ever when leaving their bikes locked up."
"Were also asking consumers buying second-hand bikes to be vigilant and check out the origin of the bike," he added.
Online auction sites may be leading to an increase in bicycle theft, Direct Line indicated, as it may be difficult to check where the bike came from.
Direct Line home insurance operates on a new-for-old basis, with the company promising to replace garden items worth up to £1,000 as standard.
