Building insurance provider esure has warned that driveway conversions could cause new subsidence in previously stable ground.
As additional run-off rainwater from newly-paved driveways seeps down to tree roots, esure suggests that the soil structure could be disrupted by new growth.
The firm is now encouraging homeowners to be vigilant and report any signs of subsidence to their building insurance provider as soon as possible.
Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure, said: "It is very appealing for homeowners in busy streets to create a bespoke parking space for their property."
"A dedicated space may increase the value of your home but subsidence damage will do quite the reverse," she added.
Ms Sellers noted that the primary risk is to properties with a tree in the front garden or nearby on the street.
A no-claims discount of up to 45 per cent is offered by esure, with further reductions if both building insurance and contents insurance are taken out together.
