Delays in waiting for repair work to be carried out may be seen as an extra cost on top of home insurance policies, according to Churchill.
The insurer conducted research which found that Britons incur some £1.1 billion of annual leave while waiting for tradespeople to carry out repairs on their damaged property.
Churchill suggests that this may be combated by asking home insurance providers to recommend reputable firms to contact for repairs.
Martin Scott, head of home insurance at Churchill, said: "There is a hidden cost to householders when having repairs undertaken or receiving deliveries."
"Home insurers often offer helplines providing contact details of reputable tradesmen even if a claim isnt being made," he added.
The survey showed that 35 per cent of the working population took paid time off last year in order to be at home while repair work was carried out.
Legal protection from Churchill provides up to £50,000 in legal costs to carry out disputes resulting from work conducted in the home.
