The cost of repairing damage caused by leaks within the home totals £1.8 billion each year, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

Some 3.3 million households are affected by water leaking from washing machines and showers each year, the insurer claims.

Halifax is also warning that one in three households in the UK does not have sufficient building insurance to cover the cost of leakages.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Homes with multiple bathrooms and the current vogue for wet rooms have significantly increased the risk of water leaks."

"Long working hours in the UK would account for many leaks going undetected," she added.

While the insurer advises that taps should always be fully turned off, it went on to warn that overtightening can weaken washers and may also lead to leaks.

Halifax states that its home insurance policies have been awarded a five star rating by independent market research company Defaqto.
