Halifax Home Insurance has issued a weather warning to homeowners regarding their garden equipment.

According to the insurer, recent warm weather may have led to complacency about protecting outdoor property and plants.

However, with cold weather forecasted for the coming weeks, Halifax is suggesting that homeowners should prepare for the freeze to avoid damage to their houses and property.

Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "A sudden unseasonal drop in temperature can wreak havoc on peoples homes and gardens if they are unprepared for it."

"By simply protecting plants and insulating pipes, you can help protect yourself from disasters," she added.

Methods of protecting plants could include placing mulch around roots and covering young plants with horticultural fleece, Halifax advised.

Building insurance policies from Halifax are for an unlimited amount, so any rebuilding work which is required following damage to property is covered in full.
