Pet insurance provider More Than has created a helpline which it says is a kind of NHS Direct for animals.
Following a recent trial with its pet insurance customers, More Than is now to launch the service, called Vetfone, in full from Monday, April 2nd.
The creation of the helpline was inspired by research from the insurer, which found that some £19 million is lost by businesses each year due to unnecessary visits to vets.
Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director of More Than, said: "When a pet becomes ill, many people dont hesitate to take time off from work to rush them to the vet."
"Vetfone will provide worried pet owners with 24-hour access to a qualified veterinary nurse who can advise them on the best course of action," he added.
More Than says it provides pet insurance policies from £6.99 a month for cats and £7.99 a month for dogs, with a 15 per cent discount for customers who purchase a policy online.
