Home improvement disasters cause damage worth about £2.6 billion each year, according to Churchill Home Insurance.

The protection provider is now advising its customers to check that they are covered for any accidental damage which may occur during renovation efforts over the Easter weekend.

Churchill issued the advice following research in which 51 per cent of respondents admitted they are "not very good" at DIY.

Some 18 per cent of those surveyed stated that they "simply cant get the hang of it".

Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, said: "Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home."

The research found that one in ten homeowners have caused damage during repairs and improvements in the past year, while a further ten per cent have caused breakages on more than one occasion in the 12-month period.

Churchill offers a discount of up to 25 per cent to customers who purchase building and contents insurance policies together.
