Britons cause a combined total of £350 million of damage to their homes every year by copying shows such as DIY SOS and Changing Rooms, according to Halifax.

The home insurance provider reveals that the average household expenditure when inspired to carry out a property makeover is £4,880.

But the average cost to put right the damage caused by such efforts is £484, the company adds.

Vicky Emmott of Halifax Home Insurance comments: "Even Changing Rooms itself was not immune to the odd DIY disaster - Linda Barker once destroyed someones valuable collection of teapots."

"So its certainly worth checking that your home insurance will cover you for accidental damage," she asserts.

More than a quarter (27 per cent) of Britons undertook home improvements after watching Changing Rooms, a Halifax study found.

Figures published by esure to mark the 20th anniversary of the Great Storm in the UK show that damage to homes caused by high winds is typically linked with occurrences of flooding.
