Purchasing a safe in which to store valuable items may not mean you pay less for home insurance, it was claimed this week.
According to Anthony Neary, managing director of security supplier The Safe Shop, buying a safe does not necessarily bring premiums down - but it should mean that you are never refused cover.
Mr Neary said that while they are not essential, some home insurance providers will not sell cover to customers with high-value items who do not have a safe.
"It would be people with excess amounts of valuable items," he explained. "Certain customers are told that they must buy a safe otherwise theyre not going to give them cover."
However, he added that those who fit door and window locks to their property may often find their home insurance costs reduced.
Meanwhile, statistics from the Home Office have shown than the majority of burglaries are carried out by opportunistic criminals - a fifth of whom have not even needed to use force to break into a house.
