Home insurance provider esure has noted that, "alarmingly", many households are using their garden sheds as extra storage.
Some 30 per cent of respondents to a recent survey admitted to keeping non-garden possessions in their shed, while nine per cent of sheds regularly go unlocked.
Those in the south-east keep the most valuable items outdoors, with sheds containing an average of £577 in belongings in the region.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure Home Insurance, says: "Homeowners should check the limits of their insurance policies."
"Some are relatively low and in the event of an outdoor theft not everything may be covered if your shed is bulging with valuables," he adds.
Just over three in ten (31 per cent) of those surveyed said that they turn to their shed as extra storage space as their house is simply full.
The company recently advised football fans to ensure they have adequate travel insurance before heading to Russia for the Champions League final later this month.
