Research from insurance provider PruProtect shows that 28 per cent of consumers feel more secure having ticked items off of their "to do" list.
Three in ten prefer to deal with problems immediately, while 83 per cent believe they are effective in handling their day-to-day administrative tasks.
However, 19 per cent say they would be unable to maintain their desired lifestyle if illness or injury kept them off work.
The financial services provider adds that 87 per cent of respondents have no payment protection insurance, mortgage cover or insurance against accident, illness or unemployment.
Sammy Rubin, chief executive officer of PruProtect, says: "There is obviously a gap between what issues we, as a society, are worrying about and what were doing to alleviate these worries.
"Protecting ourselves in the event of changes to our personal circumstances can take a huge weight off our minds."
Car rental provider easyCar has revealed that 41 per cent of couples argue over money - even more than the 37 per cent who argue while driving overseas.
