Last year 3.33 million people travelled abroad without any travel insurance.

Research from Sainsbury Bank shows that 13 per cent of all holidaymakers are taking the major risk of not buying travel insurance.

Sainsburys Bank travel insurance manager Karen Preston said: "Travel insurance is essential for anyone going abroad, even if they are just planning a long weekend.

"The largest number of travellers going on holiday without insurance seem to be the under 24s so we are urging them in particular not to forget travel insurance and to make sure its on their holiday to-do list along with sun lotion.

"By shopping around, you can find quality cover at a competitive price."

Travel insurance not only covers you for lost of stolen baggage but importantly it covers against any expensive hospital treatment that could be necessary after an accident.

It is estimated that 241,000 travel insurance claims for medical or hospital care alone were made in 2005.
