Separated and single parent families have been advised to check that they are covered by travel insurance before they jet off on their holidays this Easter time.
A large number of families may not be covered by all family travel policies, with many families now comprising of separated or divorced couples where the children may live most of the time with one parent but holiday with the other parent.
Research into more than 400 travel insurance policies by analysts Defaqto found that small print definitions of family vary with many family policies not fully covering all separated families.
Brian Brown, one of the reports authors, commented: "With one particular policy we examined, a customer who is separated and does not normally live with his or her children, but takes them on holiday, would find that those children are not covered under the terms of the policy."
In light of the research, Joanne Field of American Express Travel Insurance urged parents to check the terms of their policy and to call their insurer to clarify any issues.
