Avalanches spur travel insurance warning

American Express Travel Insurance has issued a particular warning for the need to be insured for winter sports as this ski season has been one of the highest on record for avalanches.

As the ski season draws to a close, temperature fluctuations throughout the season, as well as the number of skiers and snowboarders venturing off-piste on fresh snow before it has had a chance to stabilise, have led to a large number of avalanches.

Without travel insurance, snow sports enthusiasts could be putting themselves at serious financial risk in the event of any accidents, with recovery from the slopes and hospital treatment often totalling thousands of pounds.

Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Travel Insurance, advised that people should check what various policies consist of.

"It is vital to compare cover when buying winter sports travel insurance, as policies can vary enormously," she said.

"Not all insurers offer off-piste cover as standard or cover search and rescue costs, which could be incurred as a result of an avalanche."
