UK paying over the odds for travel insurance

People could be paying out more than they need to for travel insurance, according to Churchill.

Although many people buy single trip travel insurance for a bulk number of days, more people in the UK are going on numerous trips throughout the year, making multi-trip travel insurance policies a potentially more suitable bet.

Research from Churchill Travel Insurance (CTI) revealed that short breaks are becoming increasingly popular, with these now nearly doubling the number of longer holidays taken.

Yet a number of insurance providers and travel agents sell policies for a block of days, resulting in frequent holidaymakers potentially paying more than they should be.

Mike Ketteringham, head of CTI, commented: "Holiday-makers should check they are only buying travel insurance cover for the number of days they need and they arent buying a block policy without realising.

"As our research shows most travel agents insurance policies are best suited to those embarking on a week-long holiday rather than those going away for just a couple of days," he added.

Holidaymakers are advised to use online sites to find the most suitable policy for them, which may involve flexible policies that allow people to tailor their cover for them, or taking out an annual travel insurance policy.
