Travel insurance has been advised for those inspired by recent books to explore new places on both long and short breaks.

Research conducted by American Express Travel Insurance (AETI) found that one in six of the 10,000 customers surveyed have been spurred on by books and their subsequent films to travel to new destinations.

Inspirational works include the Da Vinci Code, The Lord of the Rings and Captain Corellis Mandolin.

The research also found that the number of people expecting to take numerous short breaks throughout the year has risen, highlighting the need for people to consider an annual insurance policy.

Independent travellers are also on the rise, with more people using the internet to book their own flights and accommodation.

AETI has advised people booking their holidays in this way "to purchase their travel insurance cover at the time of booking their trip to fully benefit from cancellation and curtailment cover" – the third most frequent reason for claims.
