Despite cheaper travel insurance being made available a large number of people are still failing to take out a policy before they go on holiday.
Competition in the travel insurance market has led to some companies offering policies for as little as £8, yet in an attempt to save money people are putting themselves at risk of greater financial costs in the event of cancellation or illness on holiday.
Brian Brown, associate director of Defaqto, has advised that although travel insurance sold with package holidays in the past was relatively expensive, numerous cheaper deals are now available for those who are prepared to shop around.
"With travel brochures you get it into your head that it costs £30 for cover," said Mr Brown.
"If you shop around it can come to a lot less."
Although many UK tourists associate travel insurance with more exotic or potentially dangerous locations, travellers to the European Union are reminded that they also need to be covered as the recently introduced European Health Insurance Card may not necessarily cover them for the treatment that they would expect free of charge on the NHS.
