Before purchasing travel insurance it is advisable to check the exact terms of the policy, Defaqto has warned.

The financial research company has highlighted the fact that although competition in the travel insurance market has driven the cost of premiums down, cheaper deals may not offer the most beneficial cover.

Brian Brown, the associate director of Defaqto, has warned that less expensive policies are not always as attractive as they appear.

"The smaller end of the market is lacking round the margins of cover," he said.

"It is not one failing in particular that marks out the cheaper cover, but rather a combination of limits."

It is vital to check the fine print to see whether areas such as missed or delayed departures, lost valuables individually worth more than £200 and medical cover for at least £1 million are included in the terms of the travel insurance policy.

Mr Brown added that cheap deals should not be dismissed, but that it is always worth double checking. "There are a massive range of policies and different levels of cover. Some £9 policies are fine, it depends on what cover you want," he said.
