Many Britons are failing to take out travel insurance prior to holidays, says new research.

The study indicates that 44 per cent of Brits heading abroad fail to take out travel insurance, leaving themselves open to considerable financial problems should things go wrong.

In addition, 74 per cent of Britons said they dont take out travel insurance when going overseas for a short break, found swiftcover.com.

It is thought the new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) has helped instill this relaxed attitude to travel insurance among the general public.

"There is a general opinion that the EHIC will provide free medical treatment anywhere in Europe but this isnt always the case," commented swiftcovers director Tina Shortle.

"When travelling to countries like Spain, private clinics and hospitals are most often the first port of call after an accident or a medical problem, and the EHIC does not cover private clinics."

She added that adopting an "itll never happen to me" attitude can leave you in severe financial difficulties, should an accident or ill health befall you.

One night in a private clinic in Spain can cost as much as £1,600, the research pointed out.
