Norwich Union has uncovered the holiday hazard hotspots for illness, accidents and crime.

Thailand, Mexico and South Africa are not only the most popular exotic destinations, but they are also the most hazardous, the insurer has found.

Sunny Mexico has the highest number of insurance claims for sun exposure, Thailand rates poorly for theft, traffic, baggage loss and tummy bugs and South Africa came out worst for robbery with violence.

Despite these rankings, overall the survey of insurance claims showed that the majority of holidaymakers enjoy a trouble-free trip, said Norwich Union.

"The majority of holidays go off without a hitch, but we would advise everyone to take the same precautions abroad as they would here," advised Dawn McMullan, travel product manager at Norwich Union.

"Our research shows that you need to take a little extra care in certain countries and of course make sure you are adequately covered by travel insurance," she said.
