An increasing number of retired people are spending their later years discovering the world, according to new research from AA Travel Insurance.
Figures released by the company have shown that there is a growing trend among older people to spend their retirement globetrotting rather than sitting at home counting the pennies.
The AA has even established a new name for such people: Golden Age Packers, or Gappers.
In its poll of over 1,000 people, 34 per cent have taken an extended holiday in the past five years, while 27 per cent have enjoyed at least three holidays in the last 12 months alone.
Meanwhile, over a third admit to travelling more today than they did five years ago.
Many of this new breed of Gappers are taking breaks to discover new things and to enjoy different experiences, the AAs research found.
Alison Crossley, AA Travel Insurance manager, explained: "Exotic destinations are much more accessible now and older people arent letting age get in the way of having a good time and exploring the world."
However, she warned that it still remains important that older travellers are adequately insured for their travels abroad.
