Post Office has been named best direct provider for its travel insurance package at this years British Travel Awards.

The company gained almost one in five votes in the consumer poll, the largest of its kind in the UK, claiming the title of Best Travel Insurance Direct Provider against nine competitors.

Kevin McAdam, head of travel and leisure at Post Office, said: "We are particularly proud that customers have voted us as their number one direct provider."

"Our policies offer them flexibility, choice and value for money from a brand they can trust," he added.

Post Office is the largest independent provider of travel insurance with some 1.4 million policies issued in 2005.

Lorraine Barnes Burton, joint managing director of the British Travel Awards, which this year received over 100,000 votes, said the accolade seals Post Offices position as a market leader.

Post Office also produces the Travel Money Card, which can be used at any Visa cash machine but which will be refunded in full if lost or stolen.
