Direct Line has revealed that holidaymakers are being put at risk by agents mis-selling them travel insurance.
Research carried out by Direct Line found that 64 per cent of people taking insurance from a travel agent do not have their policy fully explained to them.
As a result, it claimed 13 per cent will travel without really knowing what conditions are covered by their insurance.
Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance, said: "As travel agents are not regulated in the same way as travel insurers, customers do not have the same safeguards."
"This means that many people are travelling overseas unaware that they are not covered for serious conditions," he added.
About four per cent of people who took part in the survey said they felt pressured to take the policy by their travel agent.
Direct Line is urging its customers to purchase travel insurance from regulated insurers to take full advantage of the extra protection offered.
The calls come as insurers warn their customers that winter sports such as skiing may not be included in some travel insurance policies.
