Halifax Travel Insurance has advised its customers to ensure they have adequate protection against loss, theft or damage when fleeing the country this Christmas.
The tips come following research by the company which showed that 2.5 million people plan to travel abroad over the festive season, which Halifax claims is a record.
And with £727 million of presents expected to be taken in luggage, Halifax is stressing the need for travel insurance which covers all eventualities.
Vicky Watson of Halifax Travel Insurance said: "While the scenery of a traditional Christmas may be changing, the desire to celebrate with friends and family remains strong."
However, she warned: "Each January we see a substantial rise in claims for Christmas presents that have been lost, stolen or damaged."
Ms Watson added that travel insurance should be to a sufficient value to cover replacement costs and customers must remain sensible and not succumb to "Christmas mania".
Halifax Travel Insurance offers a range of policies including single trip cover for journeys of up to 185 days and a family package for two adults and up to four children.
