Skiing off-piste may not be covered by standard travel insurance policies, says insurer American Express.
The company warned that many policies do not cover off-piste skiing, potentially leading to high medical bills for the treatment of any injury sustained.
This, it advised, could include a cost of up to £2,000 for injured parties to be airlifted from the slopes.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express, said: "Patchy conditions have been a problem in Europe this season and could tempt holidaymakers to flout rules."
"We would encourage everyone to ski or board wisely and obtain appropriate travel insurance cover before they depart," she added.
American Express suggested that its winter sports cover may be useful if inadequate snow coverage forces slopes to close, or if too much snow leads to avalanches.
Skiers planning to make two or more journeys may be able to save over 30 per cent on their travel insurance premiums by taking annual cover from the firm.
