A standalone health insurance policy may be beneficial to Britons moving abroad, it has been claimed.

Bupa spokesperson Thomas Flygare suggests that the additional cover afforded by a standalone policy could prove useful if medical treatment is required.

He notes the availability of expatriate health insurance from UK-based institutions which are prepared to assist Britons living abroad.

"Even though the quality of health care is improving fast almost everywhere around the world, there are places where the standards are not as high as you may be used to," Mr Flygare warns.

But he advises that UK-based health insurance could provide access to the "very best" treatments available.

"We recommend taking out insurance so that you can have peace of mind knowing that your medical needs are protected," the spokesperson concludes.
