Halifax has provided a list of hints for first-time buyers to ensure their entry into the property market is as stress-free as possible.

The advice has been informed by the banks First-Time Buyer review which is published yearly and examines the issues facing customers trying to fund the purchase of their first home.

Mark Heaton, head of mortgages at Halifax, said: "Buying your first home is an important decision and can be a daunting experience."

"We aim to assist first-time buyers every step of the way and our specially trained advisers are on hand," he added.

Tips on the list include planning ahead to ensure notice periods are observed and to avoid last-minute packing when moving in.

The bank also encourages its clients to think fully about the features they require in their home, suggesting that a detailed list of "must haves" and "would prefers" can help to identify priorities.

Halifax says it offers live webchats with its advisers who may "pop up" on its site to provide help to new customers.
