If Santa gets run over by a reindeer this Christmas, his finances could be in real trouble, an expert warns.

As Mr Claus is a seasonal worker, he could find it difficult to obtain payment protection insurance (PPI), according to Simon Burgess of independent PPI provider British Insurance.

While his advice is a little tongue-in-cheek, he points out that the same rules apply to other seasonal staff - such as Santa impersonators or temporary sales assistants.

"This is very much the tip of the iceberg as there are whole swathes of our society left exposed without insurance cover because of their employment situation," he explains.

Anyone left unable to meet their mortgage repayments due to illness or injury could consequently face a "bleak midwinter", Mr Burgess concludes.

The news follows warnings from legal practice Pinsent Masons that Mr Claus may also fall foul of data protection laws if he keeps letters from children beyond December 25th.

And by not offering a seven-day returns policy on the toys he delivers, Santa could also be breaking distance-selling regulations.ADNFCR-8000200-ID-18393550-ADNFCR©
