Fresh thinking may be required in order to address the level of affordable property in the UK, it has been suggested.
The assertion comes from the National Housing Federation, which contends that the construction industry may be able to help increase the supply of homes across the nation.
Spokesperson Joe Dumont says: "Now is the time to look at how we can help house builders to continue to deliver affordable homes."
In light of the current credit crunch, he notes that private builders are becoming increasingly willing to offer property to housing associations.
Mr Dumont claims that this reflects suggestions made by the National Housing Federation itself in recent weeks.
Now he urges the government to "facilitate this and actually help coordinate the approaches which housing associations are getting".
The federation has around 1,300 non-profit housing associations within its membership, providing two million affordable homes to up to five million people across the UK population.
