Prepaid cards

They may be a relatively new addition to the market but the use of prepaid cards is rapidly on the rise.

Ultimately, they give you all of the benefits of using a debit or credit card but none of the hassle. You sign up, put however much money you want on it and then just use it like you would with any other card. It means you can keep money separate from your other accounts and with some you don't even need identification to take one out. This should save you a good half an hour of filling in forms in the bank.

As there's no credit involved, prepaid cards can be useful for people that get refused debit or credit cards but still want the security of plastic cash. If you run out of funds and you want to carry on using the card you simply top it up using your debit card, credit card or cash, either online or in a nominated shop.

The downside is that you'll usually face a small charge for either withdrawing cash or paying for things in shops. Most of the card providers will offer one or the other for free, though. There's sometimes a few pounds to pay when you sign up and a small majority impose a monthly fee. Make sure you know what costs you face before you make your choice.
