RAC European breakdown policies can be bought as individual single-trip cover or as part of an annual membership. Cover is available for three different zones – Republic of Ireland, Zone 1 (Western Europe) and Zone 2 (Eastern Europe) – and comes in two levels of cover: Basic and Comprehensive.

Basic policies are only available for trips of up to five days. This policy just provides essentials such as 24-hour access to English-speaking Incident Managers, roadside breakdown assistance, garage labour up to a limited cost and repatriation costs for you, your vehicle and passengers (£250 excess).

Comprehensive cover is available for any length of trip and comes with all the features of the basic policy plus a good range of additional benefits including: accommodation costs if needed while your car is being repaired; travel expenses to continue your journey or return home to the UK (or to return to collect your vehicle abroad at a later date if you leave it for repair); arrangement of a replacement drive in the event of the named driver suffering illness; and no excess on repatriation costs.

The RAC offer competitive prices on their European breakdown cover with discounts for existing members and for buying online. However, standard premiums are only available on basic and comprehensive policies for vehicles under six years old, carrying up to five people in Zone 1 countries. Exceptions to these criteria and the inclusion of trailers/caravans will result in supplemental costs.
