The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has announced it is to provide up to 100 cash machines in rural post offices.

The machines form part of a plan for a total of 300 new ATMs to complement the existing RBS network of over 6,500 installations.

Up to 100 of these have now been earmarked for placement in post offices through a collaboration with the National Federation of SubPostmasters (NFSP).

Gordon Pell, chief executive of retail markets at RBS, said: "Lack of free access to cash can badly affect the most vulnerable people in society."

"Having a free-to-use cash machine close by can make a real difference to the elderly, disabled and those living on a very low income," he added.

Under the collaboration, which may expand beyond the initial 100-machine figure, RBS will install and maintain ATMs for free on behalf of the NFSP.

It says it will install the machines in poorer communities where residents currently have to pay about £1.50 for each withdrawal.

The NFSP negotiates with the Post Office to ensure good pay and working conditions for subpostmasters nationwide.
