Halifax has launched an appeal to reunite its customers with up to £44 million in dormant savings accounts.
About 110,000 accounts are currently dormant, Halifax says, the "vast majority" of which are savings accounts.
Now the bank is attempting to find some of the account holders in order to return their funds to them.
Mike Regnier, head of savings at Halifax Bank of Scotland, said: "Our job is to reunite as many of our customers as is possible with their cash."
He predicted that the government is likely to launch a scheme through which money in dormant accounts could be used to fund charitable causes.
"We are launching our reunification campaign today so that we have as much time as possible to get the cash back to its owners," he added.
Halifax is writing to all of its customers with dormant accounts, which are characterised by having been left unused for more than 15 years.
The British Bankers Association states that dormant accounts often persist when a customer thinks the balance is too small to be worth reclaiming.
