Sky has been offering satellite television to UK customers for nearly 20 years. After the introduction of digital technology in1998 Sky have been providing digital satellite products. Receiving transmissions through a satellite dish, rather than a cable like Virgin’s digital TV service, means that Sky’s digital TV service benefits from a wider availability (available to about 98% of UK homes).
Sky digital TV customers choose either two, four or all six of their core channel packages: variety mix, music mix, news and events mix, kids mix, knowledge mix and style and culture mix. All Sky channel mixes include the standard free-to-air digital channels (standard freeview channels) and come with the option to add Sky’s premium sports and movie channel packages for an extra monthly cost.
Sky give subscribers their standard set top box free of charge. However, those looking to make the most of current digital technology may choose to opt for Sky’s more advanced equipment for extra one-off payments, a higher installation charge and possibly a higher monthly subscription cost. The Sky+ box combines a standard satellite receiver and digital recording allowing hours of programming to be digitally stored on a hard drive at the touch of a button and also allows users to pause or rewind live TV. Sky HD boxes offer the same features as Sky+ equipment but also provide higher picture quality for high definition televisions. Sky also provides a ‘Multiroom’ facility with additional satellite receivers so that different channels can be viewed simultaneously in different rooms.
Sky’s digital TV services can be bought as standalone products or packaged together with their broadband and home phone products. For more information on digital TV from Sky or to buy online please click on the links below.
