When you travel abroad on your holidays or for work, money can cause you a headache.

You could change all of the money you'll need for your trip over to foreign currency before you go - but you'll forever live in fear of it being lost or stolen.

Alternatively, you can just take the debit card for your bank account, although this way you'll face transaction fees every time you use a cash machine or pay for something in the shops. What's more, the exchange rate you receive will usually be far from favourable. The smarter option is to use a separate travel card, available from the high street banks and building societies as well as from travel agents, the Post Office and currency exchange bureaus.

Coming in the form of a Visa or MasterCard, this works just like your normal debit card. You top the card up before you go with however much you want, then spend with your card in shops and restaurants or take money from cash machine. You can go online to recharge it from your regular bank account if you need to and if you don't spend all the money either leave it on there for next time you go away or change it back to sterling.

The best part is most cards make no charge for cash withdrawals or card payments abroad. Small charges may apply for setting the account up or the initial currency exchange though.
