Van insurance
The basic premise for van insurance is the same as cover for cars. However, since the vast majority of vans are used for commercial purposes, the insurance policies can sometimes be slightly more complex.
They might, for instance, include additional features, such as monitoring tools, or restrictions on what the vehicle can and can't be used for. Since many employers will be looking to cover a fleet of vans for their business, multi-van discount packages are common.
However, many of the main car insurers don't offer van insurance, and the ones that do usually run it through a separate quoting system. This leads some people to believe that cover for vans is more difficult to obtain. In truth, there are still scores of different providers out there and a wide array of different policy types to choose from.
So many, in fact, that it would be impossible to go around them all collecting quotes individually, online or on the phone. Therefore, Know Your Money advises using the market comparison checkers to compare large swathes of the different providers in one fell swoop. We've teamed up with one of the leading comparison services to bring it right here to you at Know Your Money.
Requiring that you fill in just one form, the comparison service returns quotes from a wide range of the leading, best-recognised names in the motor insurance market. It also includes some of the more specialist names that you might not necessarily have heard of. It's important to remember, though, that some of the insurance companies opt out of being included in the service. You will have to check these separately when you look to compare.
Van insurance, like with other vehicles, can be bought as third party cover only; third party, fire and theft; or fully comprehensive. Don't assume that the less cover you opt for will automatically result in a cheaper premium, though. Like the rest of the insurance market, van cover doesn't always necessarily fit with logic. Carry out three separate comparison checks on the three different types of insurance and compare to see which is cheapest.
Make sure you check what your policy stipulates your van can and can't be used for in commercial situations, including anything which might invalidate your policy. It might be that you can have only a certain number of different drivers which have to be pre-named on the policy. Other polices might state that you can only cover a certain amount of weight or that specific specialist load types are excluded.
Don't be tempted to claim that you are only using the van for personal purposes if you are indeed using it for business. Sure, it will be cheaper, but if the insurance company finds out - and they will be deeply suspicious - your policy will be invalidated.
Also, look out for any deal sweeteners that the insurer will throw in to seal the deal. There may be discounts on offer at local trade retailers and services, as well as breakdown cover or courtesy vehicles, should you need them.
