Caravan Breakdown Cover FAQs
What is caravan breakdown cover?
Standard breakdown recovery policies often include cover for your caravan, motorhome, trailer tent or trailer when you break down. Many caravanners want to ensure that the vehicle they are towing will also be included in their policy, so it’s important to check this before you take out a breakdown cover contract with a provider. Caravan breakdown cover will usually mean that your caravan will be recovered, along with yourself as the driver, and the car that is towing it in the event of a breakdown. There are many different types and levels of policy available, so check the details carefully if you have a caravan.
Do all breakdown policies include caravans?
Many providers do include the cover of caravans in their breakdown policies, but this is not always the case. You will therefore have to check specifically for this aspect if you require your caravan to be covered. Also, size exclusions may apply to the policy. If you regularly tow a caravan, ensure that your breakdown policy will recover your caravan as well as your car.
What will happen to my caravan if my car breaks down?
This all depends on the level of cover you have with your breakdown cover. Caravan breakdown cover should ensure that your caravan is recovered alongside your car when you break down and is reunited with the car after it is fixed. Some policies will include motorhomes and trailer tents, for example, while others will not, so it’s important to check the details of your policy.
I’m a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club – do I get a discount?
Some providers do offer discounts and extras for members of the Camping and Caravanning Club. These extras can include things like leisure battery charging and ensuring that replacement hire cars have tow bars. Size and weight restrictions are also less likely to apply for members. However, be sure to check whether your caravan breakdown provider offers extras for club members.
What levels of caravan breakdown cover are there?
Most policies should include roadside recovery, which will mean you can call out an engineer to help fix your car or indeed your caravan in most cases, should you break down. Some will also help to recover your car and your caravan to a nearby garage, or recover your caravan and car from a campsite if the breakdown happens there. Some policies will only cover you if you break down while on the road, however, so check your policy carefully.
As you may well be towing your caravan a long way from home, ensuring your policy includes national recovery may be sensible. This will mean your car, yourself, and your caravan will be recovered to any address in the UK, regardless of where you are when you break down. This means you won’t be stranded in a garage in Cornwall when your home is in Leicestershire, for example.
When taking your caravan to Europe, you might want to consider taking out single trip or annual European caravan breakdown cover. This will enable you to call for roadside recovery even if you are on holiday in Europe. The cover could help you return home with your vehicles or rent a car to continue your trip.
