These days, bank accounts can offer so much more than just cash management facilities. With a packaged current account you can get a range of benefits like mobile phone insurance, annual travel insurance for the whole family, breakdown cover, subscriptions for movie rentals, free music and more.

Instead of paying for all of these things individually, you pay a monthly fee for your bank account and get them all thrown in. Prices start at a few pounds and rise according to the products included.

Whether or not a packaged current account works out as good value for you depends entirely on how many of the services you use. If you buy two

or three of these products anyway, you'll stand a good chance of saving.

It is important to check the terms and conditions for the different services that come with a bank account - often there will be limitations on the number of times you can claim through the insurance products or the cover may not be as comprehensive as you would expect if you were paying for it separately.

To sweeten the deal even further though, most packaged accounts also entitle you to favourable rates on other banking products or discounts at high street shops and restaurants.

Other than the extras, a packaged current account works exactly the same as a normal account, with full debiting and crediting facilities, automated payments, online access and the option for cheque books and overdrafts, subject to credit rating.
