British Gas Home Insurance

British Gas has its origins in the Gas Light and Coke Company, which was established in 1812 by Frederick Albert Winsor. Over the years, after the nationalisation and privatisation of the gas industry, the company changed and in 1986 became British Gas plc. In 1997, the current British Gas company was formed and is based in Windsor, Berkshire. Although British Gas is more widely known for being an energy provider for homes, it does also offer insurance to homeowners and renters.

British Gas provides buildings and contents insurance that can be purchased separately or together. The policies cover the building/contents of a home up to a specified sum that will be detailed in the relevant documents. Buildings insurance covers the physical structure of your house, and any fittings that can’t be removed. If they become damaged by fire, flood, storms, or other accidents, a buildings insurance policy should cover the cost. Contents insurance can be purchased by tenants and homeowners alike, as it provides protection for personal possessions that can be removed from the house. It can cover items such as jewellery, televisions, furniture, and electrical equipment if they are damaged or stolen. The exact level of protection offered will be in the policy documents.

Customers can also purchase some optional extras alongside their British Gas home insurance policy. These may include cover for emergency repairs, accidental damage, personal possessions cover for when your belongings are outside the home, and legal expenses cover.

Individuals who are already customers of British Gas may be eligible for special offers on their home insurance, subject to terms and conditions.
