UIA Home Insurance
UIA, or the Union Insurance Association, is strongly linked to the trade union movement as it aims to provide union members and their families with good value and good quality insurance for homes, cars, pets, and travel. However, even though UIA continues to have a strong relationship with trade unions, it does also provide policies to the general public. The origins of the company can be traced back to 1890, when it was called The Poor Law and Local Government Officers’ Mutual Guarantee Association. After several name changes, it adopted the UIA name in 1993 and has been based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, since 1996.
UIA offers two levels of home insurance cover: a Flexi policy and a Signature policy. Both of these provide buildings and/or contents insurance but with different features and amounts of cover. As well as the standard protection offered for damage caused by an emergency situation, both policies may also include the cost of alternative accommodation, certain levels of accidental damage, and trace and access cover. The Signature policy is even more comprehensive and includes many benefits as standard, such as home emergency cover, legal protection, and annual European travel cover. A Flexi policy offers more basic levels of cover, but gives customers the opportunity to purchase any optional extras they need.
All UIA home insurance customers have the option of extending their policy to include personal possessions cover for outside the home. This policy protects portable items that individuals carry with them, such as handbags, laptops, money, and credit cards. There is also an option to cover bikes when they are away from the home.
